Improper Bostonian July 11-31, 2007 Best Women's Workout A rock-hard six-pack, bulging biceps, tight buns. Yum. Grunts and groans, sticky sweat, garlic breath. Ick. Never mind your own wobbly bits and red-faced agony. Skip the awkward mingling and work out where only women are welcome. With 35,000 square feet, Healthworks has all the perks of fancy coed fitness facilities-spacious studios, plentiful machines and bubbly whirlpools in the locker rooms. Unique classes include belly dance, nia (martial arts meets modern dance), punk rope (combines conditioning drills, jumping rope and core training) and forza (based on Japanese sword fighting). Healthful and handy, Healthworks also provides onsite childcare, a juice bar and spa services. You go girl. |

The Boston Phoenix Best 2007 Reader's Pick: Best Health Club The women who go to HEALTHWORKS are totally badass. They punch things, crunch things, and sweat and grunt and kickbox their way to healthier bodies. They have help, of course, from an assortment of classes and personal-training options, not to mention amazing post-workout spa treatments. Nothing says “cool down” like acupuncture, right? |

The Dig 2nd Annual Dig This Awards 2006 Best Gym Either the dudes who read our paper are a bunch of lardy, gym-shunning swine, or else the women-only Healthworks owns the Boston gym scene so hard they don't need the male vote to sweep our readers' choice awards two years in a row. (We suspect both.) Their five local gyms have plenty of up-to-date equipment, tons of free weights, a good variety of classes, tasty-health-food cafes, free childcare and the most pristine locker rooms a $39 student membership can get you into. There's a huge rock climbing wall at the Brookline gym, and a full-service day spa at Chestnut Hill. Really, the only thing missing is a pool. But pools are usually full of other people's pee anyway, so no big loss. |

Improper Bostonian July 13-August 2, 2005 Best Women's Workout Coed gyms offer certain incentives, especially for those whose intent is to flirt as much as work out. However, for women who want to get in, get it over with and get out, all while going unnoticed, this all-women's gym is a godsend. With innovative classes designed specifically with women's health and fitness (and body issues) in mind, they serve the fairer sex better than the iron-clanging testosterone-fests that characterize most gyms. Other thoughtful touches, like the fact that the weights are always at a reachable level, add to the appeal, and best of all, you never have to worry about impressing anyone. With all of the meat-market gyms out there, Healthworks is a refreshing change of pace. |
